Talons Sports Roundup for Week of Jan. 26: Bowling Wraps Season, Women’s Basketball Adds a Win

The Talons bowlers competed in the Great Lakes Bowling Conference IV at Buzz Social in Green Bay, Jan. 31-Feb. 1. The team placed 14th out of 21 teams with a total pinfall of 6,487. A total of 168 bowlers competed. 

The Green Bay tournament marked the final competition of the season. The Talons bowled in nine tournaments over the past few months in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Illinois. The team is coached by Michael Bennett.

  • Donaven Merritt: 873 pins, 174 average, 56th place
  • Karson Schumacher: 860 pins, 172 average, 60th place
  • Shawn Houfe: 757 pins, 151 average, 93rd place
  • Makenna Barry: 749 pins, 149 average, 98th place
  • Sam Budzien: 676 pins, 135 average, 107th place

Women’s Basketball

On Jan. 29, the women’s basketball team traveled to Rock Valley College in Rockford, Illinois The team lost 50-80. Shelbi Marx led the scoring with 16 points and nine rebounds; Jazzanay Seymore scored 15 points and had 12 rebounds; Nevayah House added 11 points; and Cassie Cooley owned 10 rebounds.

Coach Aaron Dobbs said, “They competed at a high level for most of the game. They were only down two in the middle of the third quarter but could not stop the late run.”

On Jan. 31, the team again played on the road at College of DuPage in DuPage, Illinois. They beat the Chaparrals 65-53. Kamille Thomas posted 17 points; Marx shot for 15; and Seymore scored 14.

“The Talons overcame a 12-18 deficit in the first quarter by taking the lead in the second, and they never looked back. They proved they could close out a close game with a strong fourth-quarter finish,” Dobbs said.

The next competition will take place at Black Hawk College in Moline, Illinois, on Saturday, Feb. 7., at 1 p.m.

Men’s Basketball

The Talons, coached by Nile Finney, traveled to play College of DuPage on Jan. 31. They fell by just a point in a close 88-89 game. Kwame Hawkins was on fire and scored 30 points; Kai Bickham contributed 20 points; and Malik Bates added 17 points and pulled in 10 rebounds.

The next matchup is Friday, Feb. 6, when they host Carl Sandburg College at 6:15 p.m. in the Public Safety Center on the Beloit-Janesville Campus.
